Mental illness can be persistent or long-term. What makes it even more difficult is that people with mental illness are often hard to understand or stereotyped by others. For example, depression is a prominent mental health condition in modern people. Although it is not unfamiliar, it is still misunderstood and belittled.
Luna Wang’s photographic practice carefully describes her personal journey of encountering and confronting various internalizations, including self-love, self-acceptance, and mental health. Her works not only unveil the depressive and sentimental inner side of people but also conveys a compelling and positive message about mental health and well-being can be achieved by creating art. She actively explores how emotion and pain can be visualized by photography, and thus soothed by the journey and process of making photos. Photography for Luna is not only a coping mechanism, but for her it is an escape.
